Currently ranked No. 8 in South Carolina on GolfWeek’s Best Courses You Can Play, the Tournament Player’s Club of Myrtle Beach was originally, only known for being where the crotchety old PGA pros, has-beens and hanger-ons used to play geezer golf in the PGA Senior Tour Championship (now laughingly called the Champions Tour, when it should be called Who Dat Depends Tour). This course, dubbed “The Pinehurst No. 2 of Myrtle Beach,” features narrow, wind-swept fairways combined with water features and wetlands that come into play on 11 holes - spread throughout the tract. These wetlands along with waste areas create formidable carries on several holes, though alternate routes are provided for higher handicap players. More than 70 bunkers, most of them around the medium to large, undulating greens, protect the targets. The owner has truly knocked himself out, and the TPC staff have elevated their game to make this the top golf course in Myrtle Beach, and the very first, and so far the only, recipient, of a MBGA 5-Star rating. The PGA Tour’s long-knocker, Dustin Johnson, can often be found launching missiles here.
